Guidance and Counseling

The Guidance Department at Florida Christian School was formally established during the 1999-2000 school year. Since its inception, its goal has been to provide comprehensive guidance services to students in Pre-K3 through 12th grade. At the present time, the department is staffed by two full- time counselors: a school counselor and a college counselor.

The counseling services encompass individual counseling, group counseling, classroom observation of students, and developmental guidance in the classrooms. The school counselor is available to support the students in all of their personal, social, and academic needs on a daily basis.

In addition, the school counselor visits the classrooms and implements Developmental Guidance on a selected topic designed for each grade level. A few of the topics addressed through Developmental Guidance in the classroom are:

  • Anti-Bullying Program K-3 through 7th Grade
  • Rock the Test, to relieve test anxiety (3rd grade)
  • Friendship Skills, The Torn Heart, (4th grade)
  • Random Acts of Kindness (5th grade)
  • Do the Right Thing (6th – 8th grades)
  • Character Building Traits (7th grade)
  • Independent Thinking through The Scholastic Magazine (8th grade)
  • Career Assessment/College Planning (9th-12th grades)
  • Important discussion with 12th grade about Life Skills

The school guidance counselors also provide consultation to parents, teachers, and administration on psycho-educational issues. Very often the counselors serves as a liaison between faculty, parents, students, and community mental health professionals. The Guidance and Counseling Department offers a variety of services to the parents. These services include parenting seminars, family counseling, consultation, and referrals. The Guidance and Counseling Program also publishes articles regularly and they are made available to our FCS parents.

Educational and career planning is addressed through our Naviance Program. The school counselor and the college counselor meet with each 9th grade students to begin the college planning process. Through Naviance, the students take a personality and career assessment with immediate results. Throughout the students four year high school journey, their process is tracked through the Naviance Program. The school counselor and the college counselor continue to provide assistance to the students throughout their four years of high school.
